Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to treat Psychiatric and Neurological Processes

Processes treated with this technology:

Psychiatric

Neurological

Our team is made up of more than thirty specialists, independent advisors, with the ability and experience in neuroscience fields. They contribute from psychiatry, neurology, and pain units, as well as from psychology and neurorehabilitation. Moreover, they can provide individual clinical criteria for each patient, without forgetting the human aspects that encourages the awareness for the disease.

This team focuses on delving into some mechanisms that are the origin of the functioning of the brain, providing new perspectives on the diagnosis and treatment of ailments of great impact tat push the limits of neuroscience.

Neurocavis Objectives:

1) Progress in treatment protocols to improve outcomes.
2) Facilitate access to deep TMS technique.
3) Produce high-quality scientific excellence.
4) Adapt technologies to the characteristics of each patient.
5) Establish collaborations at institutional and local levels.
6) Create sustainable economic and social values.
7) Provide training oriented to the labor framework.
8) Provide access to ambitious research projects.

Action on the brain. The action on the brain is produced by structures known as coils, in the form of 8 or H (lower image). The former are made up of two iron rings surrounded by a conductive copper wire that generates a magnetic field by passing an electric current that affects the surface of the brain.

The H-shaped ones are manufactured with a braid oriented in the three axes of space (upper image) which, with the passage of current, produce a more extensive and deeper magnetic field than the 8-shaped ones, expanding its effect to the length and width of the entire brain.

Selection of patients. Patients must meet certain conditions before receiving deep TMS treatment:

  • Correct diagnosis justified in writing by a psychiatrist.
  • Not responding to drugs during the last three months.
  • No history of epilepsy
  • Not be a carrier of steel plates on the head.
  • Do not have implanted programmable brain, spinal cord or heart systems.

Treatment. It consists of a daily 25-minute session for 4 weeks, resting on Saturdays and Sundays (20 sessions), followed by two other weekly sessions for three months (26 sessions), for a total of 46 sessions.

In the published international studies of interest, as well as in the verifications carried out by Neurocavis, the results obtained are consistent, achieving benefits in up to 75% of the cases.

The brain atrophy observed from the age of 60 requires more energy than in the young to obtain the same benefit.

Neurocavis adapts treatment protocols to the individual characteristics of the patient. On the other hand, it checks the evolution of the patient, comparing the results before, during and at the end of the treatment.

What can we expect from the future in the short-medium term? Currently, new drugs must exceed the 50% benefit limit and brain treatments must be combined with an improvement in anatomical and functional imaging techniques (CT and MRI). The combination of non-invasive technologies (NIBS) that can measure the chemical and biological processes that occur inside our body and our brain through molecular images, are proving to be a very powerful tool for their observation.

Conclusion

While we await the arrival of new and promising research procedures, deep TMS is a powerful tool in continuous evolution that has already been incorporated into conventional treatments and is highly effective even when other options have failed. Deep TMS reinforces, on numerous occasions, the benefit of currently used medications and psychotherapy.
